Summary

San Antonio, Texas, Sept. 25-28, 2003

Article to Tin Can Sailors Reunions in Review, by Sandy Smith

San Antonio, Texas, in the great southwest was our 2003 reunion location. It has many attractions from the Alamo, to the riverwalk, to the markets and early missions. It has historic sights, military attractions, sunny weather and a festive Spanish flavor.

HOTEL: The hotel for the reunion was the Woodfield Suites, located 5 blocks from the river walk, two blocks from the market, and right on the trolley line. Each room was a fully equipped suite. The hotel offered a complimentary deluxe continental breakfast and evening cocktail hour which was attended enthusiastically by the Renshaw crew.

HOSPITALITY: The Renshaw Hospitality Suite was open each day of the reunion for visiting and sharing memories. There were plenty of sodas, beer, and various snacks.

TOURS AND ATTRACTIONS: We enjoyed scheduled tours for Friday and Saturday to take advantage of the many attractions in this area.

Friday tour -
We took the bus throught the scenic Hill country for about an hour to reach the picturesque old German town of Fredericksburg. It's like stepping into Old World Germany, with quaint shops, homes and historic sights. Here we visited the National Museum of the Pacific War with its Admiral Nimitz Museum; the History Walk lined with rare aircraft, tanks and guns; Garden of Peace from the people of Japan; Memorial Walk; and the Plaza of the Presidents.

Saturday tour - Saturday's half-day tour took us to the Alamo, historic San Antonio and for a boat ride down the river through the heart of San Antonio.

HAPPY HOUR AND BANQUET: We enjoyed the Hotel's Friday evening Happy Hour and then gathered for our own pizza party. This was a casual, but fun time. On Saturday evening we had gala banquet at nearby Fort Sam Houston. At the banquet we honored the ship's proud history, recognized shipmates present and past, and heard from a distinguished speaker. This year, we were fortunate to have Commander Kevin D. Reynolds, USN, Commanding Officer of Navy Recruiting District, San Antonio. He is a remarkable speaker and he gave a moving presentation on the U.S. Navy Today.

T-SHIRTS and CAPS:
We all received the Renshaw t-shirts and hats we ordered.

NEXT REUNION: Scheduled Oct. 7-10, 2004, in Portland, Oregon.
